BLOOMBERG IMPORTER

The Bloomberg messaging system is a standard communication tool within the financial market community. In addition to providing extensive research and news, it provides users with tools to communicate with one another -- or with those outside the Bloomberg system -- via email, chat, blog or instant message. Globanet’s Bloomberg Importer allows companies to integrate this information into their existing messaging systems, such as Microsoft Exchange.

Regulatory requirements make it critical for companies to archive this data and make it available for discovery. Retention is mandated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Rule 17a-4, which insists upon the maintenance and preservations of records for the required period of time and the ability to immediately produce or reproduce by means of "electronic storage media" as defined in SEC Rule 17a-4(f)(1)(ii) that meet the conditions set forth in SEC Rule 17a-4(f).

Bloomberg communications are captured in a handful of daily XML dump files and made available for customers to download for storage and/or analysis with other compliance software. Bloomberg’s proprietary messaging system presents an obstacle for many companies, however. Since a few large files contain thousands of messages, future discovery of text would yield the entire set of messages. Therefore it is even more critical that these messages be imported into dominant multipurpose messaging systems, like Microsoft Exchange, where search functionality can be vastly improved.

Bloomberg Importer is used to facilitate and optimize the archival and future discovery search process. Bloomberg Importer parses the XML dump files and copies the data into individual messages it constructs and places in Microsoft’s multipurpose Exchange application. Moreover, once this process is completed, the messages may also be processed further by third-party software, thus allowing a search to retrieve a single message instead of thousands.

At present, Bloomberg Importer can import messages into Microsoft Exchange and Symantec Enterprise Vault. Also capable of importing into any system supporting SMTP ingestion.
