Symantec Enterprise Vault's journaling system enables Symantec partners to work with the APIs to manipulate the stream of ingested data. Globanet was the first third-party partner to take advantage of these APIs, since the release of Symantec Enterprise Vault Version 3.2 in 2000.

These plugins allow us to develop rules that select messages based on various criteria, such as email message, user attribute, email message direction and subject. After selection, a wide variety of actions can be taken, including assignment of particular retention category setting, storing an archived message in particular vault or deletion.

For example, an extremely simple plugin could indefinitely retain all communications sent to or from users with the "legal" attribute, while messages from users marked as "support staff" are retained for only one year.
